an exploration of memory and imagination through dance

METHOD

The Stories In Motion Workshop series takes an experimental approach to dance improvisation.

As a means to unlock interesting material, voice recorders (on smartphones or tablets) are used to record the stories of the participants. Narrated on the day, the voice recordings act as tools to listen to other voices and interpret them in movement with intention and clarity.

This narrative method was inspired by Janet Cardiff’s audio walks and by sociologist Doreen Massey’s understanding of space. The method is a continuation of the research behind the Sound Maps exhibition at Telegraph Hill Park.

FOCUS

Each workshop is designed around a chosen theme. The most recent workshop, held at Urbanraum in June 2017, was centred around the concept of home. Inspired both by the abstract idea of rootedness and the practical ways to express this in the body, we explored what it is to build, to maintain and to move house. Through movement improvisation, speech and play, we shared our stories of home, connecting us to ourselves and to each other.

What stories emerge from remembering, reinventing, performing and sharing?

WE AIM TO

  • Unravel interpretations of the theme in question
  •   Express sentiments and thought processes through the body and movement
  •  Follow our impulses
  •  Use improvisation to delve into deep and rich territory
  •  Find links with other movers and build creative relationships
  •  Enjoy the journey of discovery
