WILD ACCESS / PANKOW

WILD ACCESS Pankow was designed for Sportanlage Rennbahnstraße, a public sports centre in the northern district of Berlin Pankow. The site covers a large terrain that includes football fields, a full 800m running track, and designated spaces for alternative sports such as skating, archery and Discgolf. There is also a traffic safety training centre and a primary school on site.

After sun set, the site turns into an alien place, with little reference to its daily use. Starting with an audio walk across the site, the performance sought to emphasise its uncanny nature. The audience gathered at the entrance, where they were given headphones and assigned an audience guide. The audience guides led the group with the aid of flashlights, as they listened to the audio track. The audience moved through empty fields and deserted pathways that were enlivened with field recordings from the site, hereby making audible that which was no longer visible.

They arrived at the running track, where two dancers signalled to each other with light beams. A choreography ensued that was just as much defined by the movement of the audience as it was by the movement of the dancers: they came close, then ran away, repeatedly colliding in an interplay between distance and proximity, intimacy and estrangement, light and darkness.
