DESCRIPTION

Today Is The Day is a performance installation drawn from the 1922 novel Ulysses by James Joyce. One performer, Ian McCarthy, moves through an interactive installation, reconstructing actions from his daily life on fast-forward. An old-school typewriter invites audience members to type their thoughts, the sound of which is echoed in the sound score. Texts from both the original novel and the performer’s stream-of-conscious diary entries are interwoven in projections and printed on paper, inciting new narrations and lifting Joyce’s words off the page into a never-ending re-edit.

Today Is The Day is an open-ended conversation, in which recurring elements allow for unique connections to be made. Viewers have described it as ‘challenging’, ‘puzzling’ and ‘thought-provoking’. Joyce’s questioning of the existential nature of time and space is transformed into a live, participatory and immersive experience.

‘What stands out most is the moments of stillness punctuating these frantic motifs, captured glimpses of humanity and wandering thought we can all relate to in our daily lives. There is something inherently calming about watching Ian’s choices play out before us, something cathartic about accepting the reality of boredom in life. In her exploration of the novel, Beatrix’s success is in her ability to abstract and reshape ideas from James Joyce’s Ulysses into something tangible that we not only witness, but become part of.’
